Javed Miandad's emotional statement about Imran Khan is quite in contrast with latter's other team mates, some of who even owe their fame and fortune to Imran. Among these, many, including Yusuf Yohana aka Mohd Yusuf, Mushtaq Mohd, Syed Anwar, Inzamanul Haque, Syed Ajmal, Saqlain Mushtaq, etc., have all become Maulvis under the influence of Tablighi Jamat.
However, it was only Javed Miandad, who has come out in support of Imran Khan. What is more important is the fact that his message was straight from his heart and there were tears in his eyes when he spoke about his former captain.What about the rest who call themselves the followers of Rehman i Rahim? Or for that matter, Wasim Akram who is the most westernised among Imran's old colleagues, or Rameez Raja the cricketer turned international commentator. Both have maintained silence despite imoprtant Cricketing voices lending support to Imran Khan.
Recently 21 former captains of several Test playing countries signed a letter addressed to Pakistani authorities asking for Imran to be treated humanely. Yesterday the current Austrailian Captain, Pat Cummins, too made such an appeal.
My question is? Doesn't Islam teach these cricketers-turned- Maulvis the values of loyalty, commitment to human dignity, and standing up for justice. Or is their Islamic identity just a ruse to fool others?
Javed Miandad has not turned into a maulvi, yet his views about Imran Khan and appeal to the powers that be to treat Imran humanely and with dignity and release him from prison, has put his other erstwhile maulvi team mates to shame.
I am sure many responses to this post from my facebook friends will question my sympathy for Imran Khan, who was no less anti- Indian than others in Pakistan.I would like to humbly clarify beforehand that my post is not about Imran Khan, the politician, it is about the hypocrisy of those criketers turned maulvis who fool people with Tableeghi trappings but cannot open their mouths in support of a suffering team mate. This post is also about the power play of Pakistani politics wherein a former P.M. can be hanged or incapacitated or killed in jail.
